This is the central square of the capital where dances and rallies often take place, the square is 75,000 square metres and on the buildings around the square you can see portraits of Kim il Sung, Marx, and Lenin.

The Grand Monument on Mansu hill was erected in April 1972 and is a statue of Kim il Sung as well as some murals and other monuments, The statue is made of bronze and is some 20 metres tall, this is likely to be the first place you will visit on your trip to the DPRK.

Situated on the Yanggak Islet in central Pyongyang this is the hotel that we stay in while in the capital. It is over 40 stories but you will find you can book a whole floor if you want.... topped by a revolving restaurant it boasts outstanding views from all sides. The straw-thatched house which was the birthplace of Kim il Sung stands here complete with various family treasures and offering an insight into the lifestyle of people of his class in the early part of the 20th century. The house is situated in a park which is quiet and attractive and features the site where the Great Leader wrestled with a bully…and beat him of course!

Chollima is a mythical winged horse that can cover 1000 ri (400km) in one day. The imagery was used in the Chollima movement to industrialise the country as quickly and efficiently as possible immediately after the Korean War- the World Cup football squad played football at 'Chollima speed'! The statue was erected on April 15th 1961.

Featuring a 2000 seat theatre, this is a kind of school/training centre for particularly gifted children. Performances here feature young children playing many different kind of instruments better than you could possibly imagine.

Opened in 1982 this library/study centre holds over 30 million books and accommodates more than 120,000 people each day. People frequently visit this place on a day off to study various topics such as English, Juche ideology and computers. Get to question a professor..or simply watch the automatic trolley book dispenser.

This consists of a Hammer, a Sickle, and Writing Brush which signifies the intellectual element as well as the usual farmers and workers iconography. each 50 metres high. This monument was constructed to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Korean Workers Party.

Featuring exhibits extolling the achievements of the Korean People's Army in defeating US imperialism during the Korean War (1950-53). Captured US tanks, planes, and helicopters are sealed in the basement - never again to see the light of day as well as other exhibits used to put forward the Korean version of events. US spy ship seized in January 1968, the crew were freed a year later. Moored near the site that another American boat, the USS General Sherman, was sunk by an angry mob (supposedly led by Kim il Sung's great-grandfather) in the 1860s.

Unveiled on April 15th 1982, the tower is 150 m tall topped by a 20 m torch. It was constructed "out of a unanimous desire and firm will to fight resolutely for the ultimate victory of the Juche cause" Juche is the guiding ideology of the DPRK, developed by the Great Leader and adhered to and practiced by all the nation's people.

The largest stadium in the world, capable of seating 150,000 spectators. This is the venue that is used to stage of North Korea's spectacular Mass Games and dance performances, that have to be seen to be believed.
