Itinerary - Liberation Day Long Tour with charter flight to Mt Paekdu

Wed 12th Aug

4PM: The group assembles in the office for a pre-tour briefing, which will last approximately 1 hour and is designed so that you will get the best out of your tour.

Thu 13th August

AM: Meet together outside the office (time to be confirmed) and head to Beijing Airport T2 for our flight from Beijing to Pyongyang (1.5 hrs), the showcase capital of the DPRK
PM: Flight JS152 from Beijing to Pyongyang. 13:00 departure, Arrival to Pyongyang 16:00, meet your Korean guides who will accompany you during your stay. En route to the hotel stop off at the Arch of Triumph - similar to the French version (but bigger) - commemorates the liberation from Japanese rule, Fountain Park, Mansudae Grand Monument (giant statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il)
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyong

Fri 14th Aug

AM: Drive to Kaesong (an historical city near the DMZ which avoided being destroyed in the Korean War - 2.5 hrs drive), Panmunjom/DMZ (where North and South Korea continues their decades old face-off), Koryo Museum (former Confucian college, shows history of the area)
PM: Tomb of King Kongmin (dynastic king of Korea), Concrete Wall (South Korean anti-tank barrier deep in the DMZ)
OVERNIGHT: Minsok Hotel, Kaesong (beautiful courtyard hotel where guests sleep on heated floors in traditional Korean style)

Sat 15th Aug

AM: DPRK HOLIDAY: Liberation Day Return to Pyongyang (2.5 hours), Foreign Language Bookshop - read up on what you are seeing here and buy your gifts and night time reading, Kim Il Sung Square (Pyongyang’s largest square in the heart of the city), Tram Ride around city - unforgetable ride on these magnificent retro-machines, expected Mass Dance on Kim Il Sung Square

PM: Moranbong Park (where locals go to enjoy the holiday), Juche Tower (150m stone monument allowing for stunning views over Pyongyang from the top), Party Foundation Monument (sculpture of hammer, sickle and calligraphy brush commemorating 50 years of the Workers' Party rule), Golden Lane Bowling Centre  - where Pyongyangers go for their ten-pin fix, also has some early 90s arcade games



Sun 16th Aug

AM: Kumsusan Memorial Palace (Mausoleum of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il), Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery (bronze busts of anti-Japanese heroes), Pyongyang Metro (extended ride on the world’s deepest underground system)
PM: Mangyongdae Native House (birthplace of Kim Il Sung), Drive to Nampo (1.5 hours), Kangso Mineral Water factory, West Sea Barrage - 8km long long dam seperating the Taedong river from the West Sea of Korea,

Mon 17th Aug

AM: Return to Pyongyang, Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum (Korean War Museum), USS Pueblo (US spy ship captured in 1968)
PM: Mansudae Art Studio (where paintings, mosaics, statues, etc are made), Party Foundation Monument (sculpture of hammer, sickle and calligraphy brush commemorating 50 years of the Workers' Party rule)
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Tue 18th Aug

AM: Railway Museum - newly re-opened facility details the history of the DPRK railway, Grand People’s Study House - enormous library and place of study
PM: drive to Mount Myohyang (2 hours), hike in Manpok Valley - a 1 hour walk up and down the mountains
OVERNIGHT: Chongchon Hotel, Mt. Myohyang

Wed 19th Aug

AM: International Friendship Exhibition - a series of enormous subterranean exhibition rooms housing gifts given to the DPRK’s leaders by foreign political figures, notable figures, politicians and organizations
Pohyon Buddhist Temple (Historical holy temple that originates from 1042)

PM: Return to Pyongyang via Ryongmun caves(2.5 hours), Paradise Micro-Brewery & bar
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Thu 20th Aug

AM: Charter Flight to Mt. Paekdu (1 hr), Drive to Mountain and ascend to the top by funicular railway
(highest peak in Korea), picnic lunch at crater lake (highest in the world)

(official birthplace of Kim Jong Il), Rimyongsu waterfalls, Samjiyon Town

Fri 21st Aug

AM: Samji School, Samjiyon Grand Monument, drive to Pochonbo
(site of significant battle between Korean guerilla army and Japanese forces), picnic lunch at the battle monument
PM: Return to Samjiyon for flight to Pyongyang, Sunrise department store and coffee shop, farewell dinner
at the famous Pyongyang Duck BBQ restaurant

Plane option
AM: Flight JS251 departure Pyongyang 9:00AM, arrival Beijing 10:00AM. End of Tour.

Train option (non-US citizens)
AM: Train from Pyongyang departs at 10:10AM
PM: Cross border at Sinuiju/Dandong

Sun 23rd Aug

AM: Train arrives Beijing 08:34AM. End of tour.
