Itinerary - Liberation Day Short Tour


Sat 14th Aug

AM: Bus from office to airport.
PM: Flight JS152 from Beijing to Pyongyang. 13:00 departure, arrive Pyongyang, meet your Korean guides who will accompany you during your stay. En route to the hotel stop off at the Arch of Triumph - similar to the French version (but bigger) - commemorates the liberation from Japanese rule, the Fountain Park - a picturesque area in the centre of Pyongyang (an opportunity to mix with locals), and the Mansudae Grand Monument - statue of DPRK President Kim Il Sung. Check in hotel. MASS GAMES after dinner
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Sun 15th Aug

AM: DPRK Holiday Liberation Day (Anniversary of liberation from Japanese): Kumsusan Memorial Palace - Mausoleum where President Kim Il Sung lies in state, Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery - bronze busts of the Koreans who died fighting the Japanese occupation, lunch on boat
Juche Tower - 150m stone tower with lookout platform at the top and great panoramic views of the city, lunch on boat
PM: Local funfair and Moranbong Park - where the people of Pyongyang go to enjoy their holiday, expected Mass Dance on Kim Il Sung Square
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Mon 16th Aug

AM: Grand People’s Study House - enormous library/public university building modelled in traditional Korean style over looking Kim Il Sung Square, Juche Tower - 150m stone tower with lookout platform at the top and great panoramic views of the city, Mangyongdae Native House - birthplace of the DPRK founder Kim Il Sung, Pyongyang Metro - the deepest in the world, take a ride with the locals
PM: Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum (Korean War Museum) - hear and see the DPRK version of the conflict, War Victory Monuments - sculptures of notable events from the war, drive to Mt Myohyang (2 hrs)
OVERNIGHT: Hyangsan Hotel, Mt Myohyang

Tues 17th Aug

AM: International Friendship Exhibition - a series of enormous subterranean exhibition rooms housing gifts given to the DPRK’s leaders by foreign political figures, notable figures and organisations, Pohyon Temple - historical Buddhist temple which originates from 1042, but has been rebuilt often since
PM: Return to Pyongyang (2 hrs), Schoolchildren’s Palace tour and performance - centre of extra-curricular excellence with study rooms and a breath-taking children’s performance, USS Pueblo - tour the American espionage ship captured in the 1968
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Weds 18th Aug

AM: Drive to Kaesong (2.5 hrs) - a historical city near the DMZ which avoided being destroyed in the Korean War, visit the Panmunjom/DMZ - boundary between North and South Korea, Koryo Museum - preserved Confucian museum in the old part of town
PM: Tomb of King Kongmin - beautiful twin-domed tomb of the 31st King of the Koryo dynasty and his Mongolian wife, return to Pyongyang (2.5 hrs), Golden Lane Bowling Centre - where Pyongyangers go for their ten-pin fix, also has some early 90s arcade games
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Thurs 19th Aug

Plane option
AM: Flight JS151 departure Pyongyang 09:00AM, arrival Beijing 10:00AM. End of Tour.

Train option
AM: Train from Pyongyang departs at 10:10AM
PM: Cross border at Sinuiju/Dandong
OVERNIGHT: On train

Fri 20th Aug

AM: Train arrives Beijing 08:34AM. End of tour.

TOUR COST: $2,350
DPRK VISA FEE: $50 (to be paid at the pre-tour meeting)
PRE-TOUR MEETING: Friday 13th August, 4PM, at our office in Beijing
EXPECTED WEATHER: It will be very warm at this time with possible rain showers, around 25°C during the day. Raincoat/umbrella advised!

TOUR FEE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Flight Beijing-Pyongyang, train/plane Pyongyang-Beijing
  2. All meals on the tour except on the train out of DPRK – see below
  3. Hotel accommodation
  4. All entry fees
  5. Two guides and a driver per group
  6. All transportation in DPRK

NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR FEE:

  1. Single room supplement of $50 per night
  2. Spending money for drinks and souvenirs
  3. DPRK visa fee $50
  4. Tip for the guides (approx $30 total)
  5. Meals on the train out of DPRK - (bring your own food or eat dinner and lunch in the buffet car approximately $10 per person)
  6. Entry tickets for Mass Games and special events if applicable – for example Revolutionary Opera if being staged, or a visit to the funfair
  7. The lift up the Juche Tower $8
  8. Meals will have a complimentary beer but you will have to pay for extra drinks above those provided. If you are vegetarian or have special dietary requirements then please inform us beforehand
