Itinerary – Liberation Day Long Tour with domestic charter flight to Mt Paekdu

Mon 13 AugMANDATORY PRE-TOUR BRIEFING


4PM:
The group assembles in our Beijing office for a pre-tour briefing, which will last approximately 1 hour and is designed so that you will get the best out of your tour.


Tue 14 August – ARRIVAL DAY

AM: Meet together outside the office (time to be confirmed) and head to Beijing Airport T2 for our flight from Beijing to Pyongyang (1.5 hrs), the showcase capital of the DPRK
PM: Meet guides who will accompany you during your stay, Arch of Triumph – similar to the French version (but bigger)
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang


Wed 15 August –
LIBERATION DAY CELEBRATIONS!


AM: DPRK HOLIDAY: Liberation Day
Mansudae Grand Monuments – the giant bronze statues of North Korean leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. Mansudae Art Studio, the DPRK’s centre of artistic excellence. This is where most of the country’s paintings, mosaics and statues are made. Pyongyang Metro (extended ride on the world’s deepest underground system), Mangyongdae Native House (birthplace of Kim Il Sung)
PM:
Picnic lunch in Moranbong Park (where locals go to enjoy the holiday), Juche Tower (150m stone monument allowing for stunning views over Pyongyang from the top), Party Foundation Monument (sculpture of hammer, sickle and calligraphy brush commemorating 50 years of the Workers’ Party rule), Circus (optional) – A one hour circus show including clowns, trapeze artists, jugglers, and much more, expected Mass Dance on Kim Il Sung Square, Drive west along the ‘Youth Hero Highway’ to Nampo (1 hour)

Thu 16 Aug – NAMPO


AM:
West Sea Barrage, an 8km-long dam separating the Taedong river from the West Sea of Korea. Chongsan-Ri Co-operative Farm, the DPRK’s most famous farm which was visited a number of times by the President Kim Il Sung. We’ll have a tour of the farm, which will include a visit to a farmer’s house and a Kindergarten. Kangso Mineral Water Factory, where you can see naturally-carbonated water being bottled. Lunch will be a lamb BBQ at Mt Ryonggak.
PM: Return to Pyongyang, Kwanggbok Supermarket – a large multi-story shop selling all manner of local and imported goods, see locals shopping and join in, here you can even exchange  money at the market rate (unavailable elsewhere) for local currency to spend in the shop. Grand People’s Study House. Supposedly stocked with over 3 million books, this enormous library/place of study has a great view over Kim Il Sung Square. Mansudae Art Studio – The DPRK’s centre of artistic excellence, where the majority of sculptures, mosaics, and paintings around the country are made. Kaeson Youth Funfair – We’ll take on the rides of Pyongyang’s newest funfair with the locals: pirate ship, vominator, rollercoaster, bumper cars, arcades, and more.

Fri 17 Aug – PYONGYANG CITY TOUR


AM
: Kumsusan Memorial Palace (Mausoleum of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il), Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery (bronze busts of anti-Japanese heroes), Foreign Languages Bookshop, leisurely stroll through the streets of Pyongyang. On our journey, we walk through the heart of the city, and stop by Kim Il Sung Square. This is where the capital’s mass dances take place and the military parades pass through.
PM: Tram ride around the city, in some of the classic 1950s vehicles that still ply their trade on the streets of the DPRK capital. Pyongyang Shooting Range which is where DPRK’s Olympic shooters practice with sports weapons, have a try yourself if you like. Pyongyang Feature Film Studios – the Hollywood of the DPRK where some of the most iconic DPRK feature films were shot and produced. Drive to Mt. Myohyang (2 hours).

Sat 18 Aug –
MT MYOHYANG


AM:
International Friendship Exhibition – a series of enormous subterranean exhibition rooms housing gifts given to the DPRK’s leaders by foreign political figures, notable figures, politicians and organizations. Pohyon Buddhist Temple (historical holy temple that originates from 1042)
PM: After lunch we’ll hike in Manpok Valley. We will take a 1-2 hour walk up and down the mountains, following a trail that passes waterfalls and unusual rocks, all set in a stunning landscape. Return to Pyongyang (2.5 hours).

Sun 19 Aug – PYONGYANG CITY TOUR


AM:

Mon 20 Aug – MT PAEKDU


AM:
Early morning charter flight to Mt. Paekdu (1 hr), Drive to Mountain and ascend to the top by funicular railway (highest peak in Korea), hiking and picnic lunch at crater Lake Chon (highest in the world)
PM:  Paekdusan Secret Camp
(guerilla headquarters of General Kim Il Sung during the anti-Japanese struggle and official birthplace of Kim Jong Il), Rimyongsu waterfalls – scenic waterfall which never freezes despite chilling alpine winters, Samjiyon Town
OVERNIGHT:
Pegaebong Hotel, Samjiyon


Tue 21 Aug – SAMJIYON TOWN


AM:
Samji Schoolchildren’s Palace, Samjiyon Grand Monument, drive to Pochonbo (site of significant battle between Korean guerilla army and Japanese forces), picnic lunch at the battle monument
PM: Return to Samjiyon for flight to Pyongyang,
Drinks in the local Mansugyo Beer Bar, farewell dinner at the famous Pyongyang Duck BBQ restaurant
OVERNIGHT:
Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

 

Wed 22 Aug – PANMUNJOM/DMZ & KAESONG


AM:
Early morning drive to Kaesong (an historical city near the DMZ which avoided being destroyed in the Korean War – 2.5 hrs drive), Panmunjom/DMZ (where North and South Korea continues their decades old face-off), Kaesong Koryo Museum (former Confucian college, shows history of the area)
PM: Walk through the old and traditional style streets of Kaesong city, Concrete Wall (South Korean anti-tank barrier deep in the DMZ), return to Pyongyang
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang


Thu 23 Aug – DEPARTURE DAY


AM
: The flight departs Pyongyang at 09:00 and arrives in Beijing at approx 10:00am. The train departs Pyongyang at 10:40am and arrives in Beijing at approx 08:30am next morning. End of tour.

  6. Tip for the guides (approx $7/day)
  7. Meals on the train out of DPRK – (bring your own food or eat dinner and lunch in the buffet car approx $10 per person)
  8. Entry tickets to special events (Revolutionary opera, circus , etc).
  9. The lift up the Juche Tower (approx $6)
