Itinerary - Kim Il Sung Birthday LONG tour

Sat 10th April

AM: Bus from office to airport
PM: Flight JS152 from Beijing to Pyongyang, 13:00 departure, arrive Pyongyang 16:25, meet your Korean guides who will accompany you during your stay. En route to the hotel stop off at the Arch of Triumph - similar to the French version (but bigger) - commemorates the liberation from Japanese rule. Check in hotel.
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Sun 11th

AM: Kumsusan Memorial Palace - Mausoleum where President Kim Il Sung lies in state, Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery - bronze busts of the Koreans who died fighting the Japanese occupation
PM: Drive to Kaesong (2.5 hrs) an historical city near the DMZ which avoided being destroyed in the Korean War, visit the Tomb of King Kongmin - beautiful twin-domed tomb of the 31st King of the Koryo dynasty and his Mongolian wife and the Koryo Museum - preserved Confucian museum in the old part of town, before checking into the Folk Hotel where guests sleep on the floor in the traditional Korean style.

Mon 12th

AM: Panmunjom/DMZ - boundary between North and South Korea, Concrete Wall - anti-tank barrier erected on the southern boundary of the DMZ, local park
PM: Return to Pyongyang (2.5 hrs), Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum (Korean War Museum) - hear and see the DPRK version of the conflict, War Victory Monuments - sculptures of notable events from the war
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Tues 13th

AM: Korean Film Studio - where all the revolutionary and historical epics shown on DPRK TV and in cinemas are made, visit mock-up sets of various countries and periods, Pyongyang Metro - the deepest in the world, take a ride with the locals, USS Pueblo - tour the American espionage ship captured in the 1968
PM: 3 Revolutions Exhibition - exhibition exemplifying the country's Ideological, Cultural, and Technical achievements, Schoolchildren’s Palace tour and performance - centre of extra-curricular excellence with study rooms and a breath-taking children’s performance, drive to Mt Myohyang (2 hrs)

Weds 14th

AM: International Friendship Exhibition - a series of enormous subterranean exhibition rooms housing gifts given to the DPRK’s leaders by foreign political figures, notable figures and organisations, Pohyon Temple - historical Buddhist temple which originates from 1042, but has been rebuilt often since
PM: Light walking in the mountains, return to Pyongyang (2 hrs), Museum of Metro Construction - an enormous museum with a great many rooms describing the construction of the Pyongyang Metro, Kim Il Sung’s wartime bunker - secret subterranean base of the Leader and his govermnent
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Thurs 15th

AM: DPRK Holiday Birthday of President Kim Il Sung (Day of the Sun): Mansudae Grand Monument - statue of DPRK President Kim Il Sung, Kimilsungia Exhibition - a huge exhibition of the flower cultivated for the Leader - a must-see on this holiday, Juche Tower - 150m stone tower with lookout platform at the top and great panoramic views of the city
PM: Local funfair and Moranbong Park - where the people of Pyongyang go to enjoy their day off, other events for the holiday, expected Mass Dance in Kim Il Sung Square
OVERNIGHT: Yanggakdo Hotel, Pyongyang

Fri 16th

AM: Drive to Nampo (45 mins), West Sea Barrage - an 8 kilometre barrage constructed for flood-prevention, land-reclamation, and power generation at the mouth of the Taedong river, one of DPRK’s greatest feats of engineering, return to Pyongyang stopping off at Mount Ryonggak just outside Pyongyang for a picnic lunch
PM: Light walking in the area, Mangyongdae Native House - birthplace of the DPRK founder Kim Il Sung, visit to the spectacular Pyongyang Circus - a very entertaining one hour show, including clowns, trapeze artists, jugglers and much more, Golden Lane Bowling Centre - where Pyongyangers go for their ten-pin fix, also has some early 90s arcade games.

Sat 17th

AM: Train from Pyongyang departs at 10:10AM
PM: Cross border at Sinuiju/Dandong

AM: Arrive Beijing 08:34AM. End of tour.

EXPECTED WEATHER: It will be cold in the morning and evening but warmer during the day, around 15°C so bring layers.

  5. Meals on the train out of DPRK - (bring your own food or eat dinner and lunch in the buffet car approximately $10 per person)
  6. Entry tickets for Mass Games and special events if applicable – for example Revolutionary Opera if being staged, or a visit to the funfair
